Professor Alice Savage has over 25 years of experience as an author, English language teacher, and teacher trainer. She received her M.A. in TESOL from the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont and currently works as a professor at Lone Star College in Texas and the Berkeley, Summer Institute in California. She has contributed to several publications and has authored or co-authored books with Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Pearson, and others. Her current passion is exploring the ways that content-based approaches, including theatre, pragmatics, and lexical grammar can make language learning more efficient and more engaging.

SESSION SUMMARY丨演讲摘要
If we did not have social rituals with their formulaic expressions and implicit meanings, conversations would be nearly impossible. In this talk, presenters showcase the pragmatic language that people use to be polite, establish relationships, signal intentions, express disagreement and achieve other conversational goals. Lesson plan ideas for helping students recognize and employ this culturally important language will be shared and discussed.
Research shows that without instruction, students can take up to ten years to develop a sense of second language appropriateness, but with explicit pragmatics instruction, learners can make more informed choices (Ishihara & Cohen, 2010; Houck & Tatsuki, 2011). With pragmatics instruction, speakers become more confident at navigating social contexts because they can both interpret social cues and make their own intentions clear. At the same time, pragmatics is a machine with many moving parts. Some of the subskills involved include: interpreting and employing voice and gesture to communicate intentions and emotions, using stress to clarify meaning, and selecting appropriate expressions for both making and responding to conversational moves. This language has less to do with words and grammar and more to do with operating comfortably in a cultural context.
